A standard resume uploaded or built in USAJOBS must currently be two pages or less. Do not rely on older advice that every federal application needs a lengthy resume. Read the individual announcement before deciding what belongs in those two pages.
USAJOBS also notes that some jobs require a long-form clinical or research resume or CV. Follow those announcement-specific instructions rather than treating the standard resume limit as the only document rule. Resume guidance and application document guidance
Keep evidence that answers the announcement
Use this worksheet before cutting text. It separates a requirement from the evidence that supports it.
| Announcement section | What to extract | Where the application must answer it |
|---|---|---|
| Qualifications and specialized experience | Specific work, level and scope required | Relevant experience descriptions |
| Education, license or certification requirements | The credential and any required proof | Resume information plus the specified supporting document |
| Required Documents | Every separately requested attachment | The correct application document slot |
| How to Apply and evaluation instructions | Submission steps, assessments and other requested material | The application process, not an assumption that the resume covers everything |
For each relevant job, USAJOBS asks for employer, job title, start and end month/year, hours per week and descriptions showing the required level of work. Federal positions also need the applicable series and grade. Preserve those identifying details while removing unrelated narrative. What to include
Shorten repetition before removing proof
A vague sentence such as “responsible for a variety of administrative duties” takes space without showing what you did. Replace it with an accurate description of the relevant task, scope and result that your records support.
Do not add an impressive number because a resume formula expects one. A truthful description of the work is better evidence than an invented percentage. Keep separate examples when they establish different required qualifications; combine passages that merely repeat the same claim.
The two-page limit is a selection problem, not an instruction to make the document unreadable. Start with the experience that most directly answers the announcement, then check that every required qualification has visible support.
Check the submitted file
USAJOBS recommends PDF to preserve formatting, accepts files up to 5 MB and does not accept PDF portfolio files. Its builder will not save a resume longer than two pages. Preview the final document rather than relying on the page count in an earlier edit. Upload and builder guidance
Check page count, readable text, contact details, complete employment dates and hours, and the required separate attachments. The agency will assess the information actually submitted, so a supporting fact left only in an old resume cannot help the current application.
