For someone changing careers with no IT background, start with the Google Cybersecurity Certificate, then decide on Security+. Google’s program has no prerequisites. Security+ is an exam, and CompTIA recommends Network+ plus two years of security or systems administrator experience before you sit it. If you already work in IT support or systems administration, skip straight to Security+. Either way, check which Security+ version you are studying for: a new one, SY0-801, is listed for November 2026.

This guide is desk research from Google’s, Coursera’s and CompTIA’s own pages and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), opened on October 22, 2026. Prices and exam versions change, so confirm them on the provider pages linked under Sources.

What the Google certificate covers

Google lists eight courses: foundations of cybersecurity, managing security risks, networks and network security, Linux and SQL, assets, threats and vulnerabilities, detection and response, automating tasks with Python, and preparing for cybersecurity jobs. Coursera’s program page also lists an optional ninth course on using AI in a job search, and its course hours add up to about 132. Its own description says 170 hours, so treat the hour figures as approximate.

Google names tools including Wireshark, tcpdump, Splunk, Chronicle and Suricata, and frameworks such as NIST CSF. Coursera says the program can earn an ACE credit recommendation of up to 9 college credits, though each school decides whether to accept it.

Google says its employer consortium of over 150 U.S. companies is “committed to considering” graduates for entry-level jobs. That is not a hiring promise.

What Security+ involves

CompTIA’s current version is SY0-701. Its five domains are general security concepts (12%), threats, vulnerabilities and mitigations (22%), security architecture (18%), security operations (28%) and security program management and oversight (20%). CompTIA lists the English version as retiring June 11, 2027.

The next version, SY0-801, is listed for on or around November 17, 2026, with the same length and passing score and these weights: 16%, 24%, 19%, 27% and 14%. CompTIA says V8 expands coverage of AI-related risks, security operations and modern environments. If you plan to test after the switch, study for SY0-801 and not a book printed for SY0-701.

How the two connect

Google and Coursera both say the certificate helps prepare you for Security+, that graduates can get a discount on the exam and training, and that passing both earns a dual credential. CompTIA’s own Security+ pages did not mention that discount, so confirm it with Google before you count on it.

A practical order for a career changer:

  1. No IT background: take the Google certificate, or an IT support credential first (see our A+ vs Google IT Support guide), then Security+.
  2. IT support or admin experience: go straight to Security+ and use the domain list as your gap checklist.
  3. Not sure security is your lane: the cheaper test is the first Google course, not an exam voucher. Our credential path guide explains why security is often a second-step path.

The job market, from BLS

BLS reports a median pay of $129,180 for information security analysts in May 2025 and projects employment to grow 21 percent from 2025 to 2035, about 14,100 openings a year on average. BLS also says these jobs typically call for a bachelor’s degree, with some workers entering on a high school diploma plus industry training and certifications, and that employers often prefer certified candidates. A certificate alone is therefore not a promise of an analyst job; many analysts first work in IT roles.

Study material on Amazon

Security+ has no single “official” book on CompTIA’s own pages, which sell CertMaster products instead. One book matches the current SY0-701 exam code and checked as new and in stock:

Buy it only if you will test before SY0-701 retires in June 2027. If you plan to wait for the new exam, search for a title that names SY0-801: Search Amazon for a Security+ SY0-801 study guide. A book is not an exam voucher and does not replace practice.

The Google certificate has no exam and no book to buy.

Bottom line

Pick Google first if you are new to IT and want a low-commitment way to learn whether security work suits you. Pick Security+ first if you already have support or admin experience and the jobs you want name it. Plan for both if cybersecurity is the goal.
